Grayshott Pottery

Grayshott Pottery has a long history...

It emerged from the old Kingwood Pottery in Brook but has roots through its craftsmen that also connect it to Compton Pottery, which in its time was situated at Watts Gallery near Guildford and was started by Mary Watts, wife of the great Victorian painter, G.F.Watts.

When it began in 1956, the Pottery was producing ceramic giftware for London stores and gift shops. It now creates studio art ceramics for galleries and homes around the UK and under its Grayshott Stoneware brand; it makes catering ware for many well-known national high street pubs and restaurants, as well as bespoke ceramics for celebrity chefs.

In 2005 Grayshott Pottery acquired Dartington Pottery and today it is run under an Employee Benefit Trust.

Journey of the clay – free weekday 30 minute tours!
If you and your family fancy doing something a bit different and are looking for an interesting place to go – this is your chance to see a great British pottery in action.

Watch how huge chunks of grey clay make their way through the many workshop processes until they finally emerge as pristine plates for your food or as a vibrant vase for a beautiful home or gallery.

Talk to the designers who calculate sizes and volumes of new pieces and create the ceramics moulds. Discover why the casts are so precious to the craftsmen! Understand age old terms such as fettling, slip casting and jollying! Get up close to the artists as they meticulously apply layers of glazes or wax and create entirely new works of art!

Journey of clay tours are free and take place during week days – Monday to Friday 11am and 2.30pm – but please do book.

Schools, colleges and interested groups are also very welcome but advance booking is essential please. All under 16s must be accompanied for the tours please.
